A lot of customers call MTN first, hear "we can't reverse a successful transfer", and assume that's the end. It isn't — MTN's role and the insurer's role are different on purpose.
What MTN can do
- Reverse a failed/stuck transfer — when the money never actually reached the recipient, MTN can claw it back from the holding queue
- Freeze your wallet on request (the *170*5# freeze) to prevent further damage
- Lock your number against SIM swaps if you've enabled the lock
- Provide call logs and transaction records for your insurance claim or police report
What MTN can't do
Once funds have successfully credited the recipient's wallet, MTN can't get them back. The transfer is final — same as a cash handover. They can't:
- Reverse a successful debit
- Identify and recover from an unknown recipient (privacy law)
- Reimburse you out of their own funds — they're not your insurer
Where insurance comes in
The whole point of MoMo wallet insurance is the recovery side of the equation. We're the entity that legally takes on the risk and pays out when MTN can't. The split:

…they're being honest, not unhelpful. Their job ends at preventing further loss. The reimbursement is your insurer's job, and it's why this product exists. File a claim, attach the police report, and the money is back in your wallet within 48–72 hours of approval.
