If your MoMo wallet was emptied tomorrow by a SIM-swap attack, would you know what to do? More importantly — would you get the money back? MoMo wallet insurance answers both questions.
The three real risks
The product covers three things that actually happen to MTN MoMo customers, every day:
- Fraud / unauthorised transactions — someone uses your PIN or accesses your account without permission.
- SIM-swap attacks — a fraudster convinces a telco agent to port your number to their SIM, then drains the wallet.
- Wallet theft after phone theft — your phone is stolen and the attacker accesses MoMo before you can lock it.
How payouts work
When you file a claim through the app, WhatsApp, USSD, or an agent, it's triaged by AI within seconds and routed to an underwriter. Once approved, the payout lands directly in your MoMo wallet within 48–72 hours — there's no separate bank transfer, no cheque, no waiting for a branch visit.
The whole point of micro-insurance for mobile money is removing every step that doesn't add value. If we can do the verification with your live face and Ghana Card, why ask you to come to an office?
What it costs
Premiums start at GHS 2/month for the basic plan with GHS 500 fraud cover and GHS 1,000 wallet theft cover. Higher tiers exist for higher cover ceilings. The premium is debited from your wallet automatically each month.
What it doesn't cover
Insurance isn't magic. It won't reimburse you for:
- Money you sent to a scammer voluntarily (romance scams, fake job offers, "send GHS X for processing fee" tricks)
- Disputes with merchants — those are charge-back territory, not insurance
- Losses while your phone was lent to family or friends
This isn't pedantry — it's how insurance works everywhere. Cover is for events you couldn't reasonably prevent, not for buyer's remorse.
